Lunar Eclipse

Eclipse of the moon

During an eclipse of the moon, the Earth blocks the sunlight from reaching the moon.

An eclipse at the moon occurs at a full moon when the Earth is directly between the moon and the sun.

The Moon appears dark from the Earth.

Phases of eclipse of the moon

During the eclipse of the moon, the Earth's shadow has two parts:

  • The dark part is the area where sunlight is completely cut off,
  • The lighter part is the area where sunlight is partially cut off.

Total eclipse of the moon
When the whole moon is in the dark part, we will see a total eclipse of the moon.

Partial eclipse of the moon
When the whole moon or only a part of the moon is in the lighter part, a partial eclipse of the moon occurs.
